Big Savage Tunnel and Approach Trails
Closed for Construction!

Trail Construction on both ends will begin in early 2004  (Updated 1/13/2004)

Thank you for your phone calls and emails concerning the Big Savage Tunnel. Thanks to the hundreds who have contributed to our sponsor a foot campaign.

The tunnel is close to completion (although not yet finished) and we are excited to report that the trail connecting the tunnel to Frostburg and to Meyersdale will start construction soon.  Sections of the trail from Frostburg to Cumberland are still in the planning stages, and will not be completed this summer.

To allow the contractors to do their jobs and to protect the safety of all, passage through the tunnel is prohibited.

On-road detours are available on this website or bear with us until late spring or summer when we can open the tunnel to trail use.  From  Frostburg to Cumberland think about taking the train.

Thank you for your interest and be assured that getting the tunnel open and the connecting trail constructed is number one on the list.
